While the male often steals the show with his striking display of tail feathers, the female lyrebird is equally worthy of attention. These tenacious birds care for their chicks alone, a costly investment involving the construction of a nest, destruction of competing nests, and protection of her chick from other female lyrebirds. A single chick is raised in the nest, along embankments in the forests of South-Eastern Australia and Tasmania, nestled amongst ferns and fallen logs. Incredibly, 80% of the lyrebird’s song is made up of mimicry vocalisations, imitating the forest sounds around them.
