Tawny Frogmouths are peculiar-looking birds which are often mistaken for owls, but are in fact more closely related to the nightjar family. Their exquisitely patterned feathers resemble the bark of dead tree branches, allowing for camouflage across Australia’s diverse ecosystems. These birds are not known for their architectural skill, their nests being flimsy platforms constructed of a loose arrangement of sticks. Sadly, the chicks, resembling tiny white cotton balls, are often pushed from the nest.
